This week we are getting to know you better! Each one of us is unique. We will all have things in common and things that make us different from each other. At Robert Hunter, we are happy to have each and every one of you as a learner at our school. Together, we make up our school community. A school community is a group of people who come together to create a great place for everyone to learn and grow.
Monday- Watch the getting to know you video with the school counselors. You will see the other elementary school counselors in the lessons sometimes, so we wanted you to get to know them too. You will see, even though we are all elementary school counselors, we are also unique. As you are watching, try to find some ways the counselors are different. Try to think of things they have in common, or are the same.
Now it's your turn. Try to find one way you feel the same as one of the counselors. Then, think of one way you are different.
For the rest of the counselor corner time, I would like for you to spend some time away from the screen doing something that you enjoy.
On Friday, I will have a form for you to fill out where you can tell me what your chose to do!
Tuesday- Listen to these stories about being proud to be who you are. You may choose one that you find interesting or listen to as many as your would like!
K-1 --> Incredible Me
K-1 --> It's Okay to be Different
K-4 --> I'm Gonna Like Me
k-4 --> We're All Wonders
K-4 --> I Like Myself
Theme: WELCOME BACK TO E-LEARNING
Monday- Happy Labor Day!- I hope everyone enjoyed your last day of summer break.
Tuesday- Please watch my welcome back message. When you are finished viewing the message, listen to the the story All are Welcome. At Robert Hunter we celebrate all of our backgrounds, experiences and abilities. We celebrate how we are the same as well as how we are different. We are ALL WELCOME at Robert Hunter School.
After you listen to the story, think about a time you felt welcome. What did someone do to make you feel that way? What other feelings did you have at the same time? Finally, what can you do during this week at school to make other people feel welcome?
Wednesday- Today we are thinking about learning online. Listen to the story A Little Spot Learns Online. It is read by Mrs. Collins, the counselor at Barley Sheaf.
After the story, try the Online Behavior Sort. GIve a thumbs up for the behaviors that would be helpful to learning and thumbs down to those you should avoid doing.
Thursday- Tuesday we talked about things you can do to make sure everyone in your class feels welcome this school year. Yesterday, we talked about behavior for learning online. Today, let's think about how they go together. If we are showing respect and caring to our class, then they will feel welcome. One way we do that at Robert Hunter is WHOLE BODY LISTENING. Please watch my video to learn about active listening. An expert listener uses way more of your body than just your ears! Look at the picture of the monster above this message to see all the body parts we use!
Your assignment for me today is to practice listening respectfully to someone. Have someone tell you a quick story. Keep your body still, your ears listening, eyes watching and brain thinking while they tell the story. See if you you use the clues you get from their story to answer these questions:
How did they feel about the story?
What happened in the story?
Were there any other people there?
Do you have a connection to the story? Did something like that happen to you?
Monday, June 22nd- We did it! When we said good bye at dismissal on the last in person day in March, many of us thought we would only be e-learning for a few weeks. Instead, we have been learning from home for months. This has been a unique adventure that we have all been on together. I can't be more proud of how we stuck it out and learned despite the challenges. Although I missed all of my students and the other teachers, I did learn a lot about technology and resilience. Today take some time to think about what you learned and be PROUD OF YOURSELF. That's your only assignment today.
Tuesday, June 23rd- Please take some time to watch the end of the year assembly. Mrs. Litchfield's class has been working hard to interview many students and complete the assembly for you. I hope you enjoy!
I will be doing three lunch bunch groups in the summer for anyone who will like to catch up with other Robert Hunter Students. The dates will be July 15th, August 5th and August 26th. We will zoom meet at 11:30. If you would like to join, you can email me sfontane@frsd.k12.nj.us, and I will send you the zoom link closer to the date. Hope to see you then!
riday, June 19th- FUN FRIDAY!
It's the last Friday of the school year. You should be very proud of yourself and all that you have accomplished this year. Let's take a minute to dance in the weekend with this gonoodle to HAPPY.
Thursday, June 18th- Being Assertive
Sometimes your friends will do or say something that might hurt your feelings. Instead of keeping it inside or blowing up in a big argument, try using an I message. We practice these throughout the school year but it is always good to keep practicing. Remember to say how you felt, what exactly made you feel that way and what you need to feel better. Here is a worksheet with some practice scenarios.
Wednesday, June 17th- Pick up Day at Robert Hunter
No new assignments today! Enjoy a friendly wave from your Robert Hunter family as you pick up your school supplies from this year. See you there!
Tuesday, June 16th- Compromise.
Sometimes you and a friend may not always agree. One skill to use when this happens is compromise. When you compromise, you don't get exactly what you want and neither do they; but you are both happy with the new plan. Think of two people standing far away. When you compromise, you walk toward each other and meet in the middle. Here is an example
Mrs. Fontanez wanted to use red letters to make a sign for field day. Mrs. Braynor wanted to use purple. They both really liked their own colors. Finally they decided to do every other letter on the sign red-purple-red-purple. This is a compromise. They both get a little of what they want but also give up a little so that their friend is happy too.
Now it's your turn to try some situations.
Monday, June 15th- I am a good friend.
K-1--Take the fingertip challenge. Trace your hand and think of 5 ways that you are a good friend. If you would like, draw a picture of you being a good friend in the palm of your traced hand. Look at the example here ----->
2-4-- Take this survey of friendship skills. There is no right or wrong answers, but it is good to know what skills are your strengths and any you need to work on. My Friendship Skills
