Today we are going to practice advocating for ourselves by being assertive! That means asking for what we want or need in a calm, respectful and firm way. Pick two activities from below:
Grades K - 1 Read this social story with a grown up. I Can Ask for Help social story
Grades K - 3 Communicating Personal Boundaries - Imagine your friends ask you to do something that you do not want to do. It is okay to say no. Especially if its something that makes you feel uncomfortable. Practice these different ways of saying no.
Grades 1 - 4 Things I Can Say When I Need Help - Practice asking for help with these flash cards.
Grades 2 - 4 Practice Asking for Help - Use this worksheet to practice asking for help in this scenario. You may choose to write your answers first or practice saying the statements aloud into a mirror.
Grades 2 - 4 What Does Being Assertive Look Like? - Put a check next to each example of assertive communication. Optional: Explain your answers to an adult or write an explanation on another piece of paper.
Grades 3 - 4 Self-Advocacy Practice - Role play - practice writing and then acting out words you can use to ask for help from your teacher.

Then Grade 3 - 4 Am I Assertive? Read the questions and keep track of how many times you answer "Yes". Use the key to determine your level of assertiveness.
Then K - 4, choose one of the activities below to practice using I-Statements.
K - 4 Practice Using I-Messages - Read this story about using I - Messages. Write or say an I-message using the examples provided at the end of the story.
Grades 2 - 4 Communicating with I-Statements - Write two examples of I-statements you can use during your school day.

Grades 2 - 4 Then, read these scenarios: Assertiveness Scenarios. Practice using your self-advocacy and assertiveness skills to think of a solution to three of the situations. What would you say or do? Write or draw your answers on a piece of paper or share your answer with an adult.
Then, fill out this google form to fill me in on what you learned and how you are feeling this week.
