Editorial designers typically obtain a bachelor's degree or master's degree in graphic design or a related field. Aspiring designers with a related undergraduate degree, such as fine arts, can take continuing education courses in editorial design to enhance their employability. Design departments at many postsecondary schools allow for a concentration in editorial design or book design. Coursework includes a history of typography, printing press history and advanced layout software skills. The final year of most degree programs allows students to build a portfolio showing the range, quality and style of their work to potential employers.
