A chief lighting technician works with the production manager to determine what effects need to be created for the performance or concert and creates a plan to achieve the desired effect. They then direct other members of the stage lighting department to set up appropriate lighting equipment. They are the top position in the stage lighting department’s hierarchy.
The job outlook according to the BLS for a lighting director is a 9% increase between 2020 and 2030.
There are no formal educational requirements for being a lighting technician, although a degree in electrical engineering and/or theatrical production arts could come in handy.
