Wind Power

What is the wind energy?

Wind energy is considered renewable. It is one of the most environmentally-friendly sources of energy. It is based on the air movements.

How does it work?

The wind power plants are based on collecting the mechanical energy from the wind and then turning it into electrical energy. Therefore the most important parts of the wind power plants is the rotor which is used to collect the energy from the wind and the generator which changes the mechanical energy to electrical energy.

Advantages

Wind energy is environmentally-friendly, since it does not exploit any resources or not emit any harmful materials.

In terms of investment in this technology it has to be said that its profitability is not constant and depends on how strong the wind is in a particular place. However the Levelized cost of electricity indicator shows that the onshore power plants are more profitable than most other renewable energy sources.

Disadvantages

The main disadvantage of using such power plants is that it does not produce the constant amount of energy because of the fluctuating movement of air. It also produces noise and may be harmful for birds.

When is it the most efficent?

It is the most efficient when it is placed in areas where there is relatively constant air movement. In Europe it is especially effective when such power plants are located on sea shores. It exploits the sea breeze and it can be built for the same price as in the centre of the continent. When it comes to the power plants built off shore it has to be said that it requires a big investment, since the building process and maintenance is more expensive than it usually is.

Decision mechanism

This technology is to be recommended especially for countries that have a long shoreline and are willing to invest in the renewable source of energy and the private investors. However the following actions before building the power plant should be taken:

1. Check out if the area in which the power plant is to be built has access to the relatively constant flow of wind and estimate how much energy will it produce.

2. Estimate the cost of building the power plant and its maintenance.

3. If the estimates confirm that the power plant is profitable built the power plant.

Private sector

Many wind power plants are created by private investors. Their work is profitable for the environment and hence it is to be supported by the government if the following conditions are fulfilled:

1. The investor prepared the estimated cost and estimated the amount of energy produced with experts.

2. The investor fullfills all law regulations regarding the creation of the power plant.

3. The investor will store the surplus of energy (if there is such) or send it to the public electricity system.

4. The investor will make sure that the power plant is maintained in the good, save condition by either employing the experts who take care of it or investing in the technology which would be satisfactory.

Recommendation

This technology is to be recommended. It is a renewable energy source and is not harmful for the environment. If it is found economically profitable at certain place, the creation of it is adviced.
