The Netherlands

The Netherland's current situation

The usage of gas and electricity

  • A Dutch household consumes an average of 1,470 m3 of gas and 3,000 kWh of electricity per year.
  • The bigger the family, the bigger the usage of electricity and gas.
    • 2 persons: 2.950 kWh and 1.020 m3
    • 5 persons: 5.300 kWh and 1.800 m3
  • The usage of gas also depends on the type of house.
    • appartement: 900 m3
    • semi-detached: 1.650 m3
  • Over a couple of years, the total usage of natural gas, elektricity, reneable energy and warmth all increased, since the economy is in a better state, no crisis anymore. Which is good and bad.

Adaptations within the house

In the Netherlands, solar panels, PVT panels and hybrid cars, are commonly known. Also more and more people start to think about insulating their house in a better way. As well as triple or double glass is the norm in most houses. However, we can do better, of course!

The role of the government

  • The government grants subsidies for the purchase of solar boilers, heat pumps and biomass boilers
  • They make sure there are enough poles and stations for charging hybrid cars
  • All the new buildings are more sustainable and built in an eco friendly way:
    • sustainable materials
    • good ventilation
    • sustainable demolition
    • reasonable use of water and raw materials
  • They have a budget for environmental purposes, improvements and innovations
