The government has a lot of influence on the choices people make. For example in Norway it is a lot of advantages for people with electric cars, therefor a lot more people have bought electric cars. They also decide who gets money for their projects, and how much they get.
In Norway there is many different opinions about the environment in the different parties. The small parties have more concrete plans of what they want to do, than the bigger parties. This makes it hard for the voters to know what they should vote.
An important topic in Norway is the oil and gas production. The right-wing parties would like to continue with taking up oil, and also do it new places. Most parties would like to continue to take up the oil where they have already started, but not begin new places. And the Norwegian green party would like to end it all soon. This is a difficult matter because most of Norway's money comes from oil, therefore is it important to find new ways to get money, so we can stop producing oil.
An important way of thinking in Norway is the precautionary approach. It means that you have to think about what you do, before you do it. Otherwise it might be too late to do something about it. This principle is taken more serious by some than by others. Some parties mean that because of this, we should not start to take out oil from the Northern part of Norway, because we can not take it back after we begin. Therefore is it many discussions about the oil production in the northern part of Norway.
The goal in Norway is to reduce 90-95% of the greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. To make this goal the government think that it is important to cooperate with EU. Some of the plans is to make the polluters pay. So if you pollute you have to pay more taxes. The government is also planing to evaluate the budget and find out what can get more eco-friendly. They are also planning to give more money to Enova the Norwegian energy fund, so they can support even more projects.
One of the things we as a private person can do ourselves is to change to biofuels. And the government has a plan to get 40% of the fossil fuel cars to change to biofuel before 2030. If more people shall change to biofuels is it important that the biofuels comes from renewable sources. Because now most of it comes from the rain forest, so it needs to come stricter rules of what is allowed.
Another goal is to have no fossil fuels in public transport by 2025. This means that the buses has to changes to biofuels or hydrogen. This has already happened some places in Norway, but it has to happen even more places. One of the most important changes is that it has to be stricter what oil and gas production places gets approved. This is important, but they should take it even longer, and try to stop all oil production soon. If all this goals are achieved, Norway will hopefully be a low carbon society before 2050.
It is also important that we do not just do changes in Norway. Since we have more money than many other countries, we have to keep giving money to developing countries to make also these countries more sustainable.
One of the biggest barriers in politics are the voters. They are important to make changes, but they can also mean that if the parties do something unpopular they will lose voters. This is because the parties do not agree on what to do, so they will just change their vote to a different party. Another big problem in politics is the changing of governments. This makes it hard to do concrete plans, because everything might be changed right away if they change government.
To solve this problem all the parties should try to make a plan. Because if they do something important but unpopular, everyone will be in on it, so they will not loose votes because of it. This also means that even though you lose the reelection, the plans will continue. It will probably be hard to get that many parties to agree. But we all agree we have to do changes, so they should try and get an agreement about what changes they need to do. It is important that not everything that is done just will be undone again when someone else gets elected.
Another big problem is money. If you do not have the money to do something, it will not be possible to do it. Therefore is it important that all parties agree that we have to put aside money for research on new technology. We have a lot of technology, but we need a lot more. If we want to live sustainable, it needs to be easier than it is now. Most people want to to some for the environment, but only if it is easy, and does not cost them a lot of money.
Norway is quite different from most of the other countries in Europe. We produce a lot of renewable energy, but we also produce a lot of oil and gas. Since we sell more of the renewable energy to other countries, we end up using a lot less renewable energy than what we produce. There is different opinions of what we should do with the oil in the country, and different governments have different ways of approaching it. So just like in other countries, there are problems that the different parties do not agree on how to solve. Some parties wants to cut the oil production, and this is really important if we want to be more sustainable.
Another difference is that Norway is not a part of the European union (EU). Therefore our connections to the other countries might be a bit different. Even though we are not a part of EU, we cooperate with them through the European economic area (EEA). Because of this we are still affected by the decisions made by EU. We are also a part of the Paris climate agreement. Since all the countries are in the same agreements, they should cooperate about how to solve the problems.
