Minor Accidents
If a pupil has a minor injury i.e. minor cuts and grazes, a qualified first aider will administer first aid and allow the pupil time to recover in a quiet place ( classroom or Reception First Aid room) if necessary. All details of the incident will be recorded on an Minor Incident form which will be kept by the school and a copy given to the pupil.
Serious accident or illness while at school
In the event of a more serious accident or illness involving a pupil, they will be assessed by a First Aider and appropriate action taken. This could be one of the following:
1. Call an ambulance.
2. Recover at home.
3. First Aider will deal with the injury or illness, as their training allows, until the parent arrives.( this is usually when a parent is unable to collect the pupil themselves due to not being near the school at the time of the call.)
4. Occasionally parents arrange for a taxi to take a pupil home if they are unable to drive.
Head Injuries
In the event of a head injury a First aider will conduct an examination to determine the severity of the injury. Minor head bumps are common in children, particularly those of Primary School age. Providing there are no worrying signs the child will be treated as per a Head bump, given a wrist band and the accident form completed for the school records and the parents. The pupil will be monitored for the rest of the time at school and if there are any worrying changes the class teacher will inform Reception and the first Aider will take appropriate action .
For example:
1. phone an ambulance
2. phone the parents for the child to go to minor injuries, or just rest at home and monitor.
Parents are always phoned in the case of any head bump so they are aware, should any signs appear later.
