First: Remember students and staff can record audio and video directly within Canvas! (On iPads, you must use the Canvas app in order to do this.)

Teachers can record video for pages and assignments directly inside of Canvas by clicking the media record icon in the second row of the editing toolbar.

In assignments, teachers can give students the option to create and submit a "media recording" by choosing this as a "Submission Type" in the assignment's settings. (On iPads, students must use the Canvas app in order to complete this submission type.) Alternatively, students using iPads have the ability to record directly on the iPad and upload the file into Canvas (this would be a "File Upload" submission).

Outside of Canvas, to use the webcam on a Chromebook to record videos, here are some well-rated options:

Two Quick Notes:

  • With either option, students will likely need to allow the site or app to use their webcam and microphone.

  • Once they are done recording, students may need to select their saving location in the app (e.g. their Google Drive), or check their Downloads folder within Files on their Chromebook.

App, Extension or Google Workspace Setting Request: If you would like to use a specific, educational Chrome Extension, Chrome App, or Google Workspace setting, check the EPS list of apps and extensions that are currently open to students. (Staff may get the ones they need without approval.) If the one you want for students is not there, submit a request. On the form, include the grade level (ES, MS or HS) and explain the educational purpose of the tool.
