What a wonderful start to our new Unit of Inquiry: “How We Express Ourselves”! It was lovely to see everyone celebrating International Day, with students proudly wearing their traditional costumes and taking part in the parade. A huge thank you to all the parents for supporting the day with food stalls and contributions — your involvement made the event even more special.
We’re excited to continue exploring different ways of expressing ourselves throughout this unit!

This week we began our unit with a provocation activity: “Fake News vs. Real News.” Students were given examples of fake news and asked to share their understanding by discussing how we know if news is real or fake. We then introduced a simple framework: Access, Analyse, Evaluate, Create, which students can use to make their own judgments about the information they encounter. This activity helped them think critically about media and the messages they see every day
Next week: we will explore different types of media and learn how media can influence people’s thinking and behavior.
Central idea: Media is a tool that can influence thinking and behavior.
Specified Concepts: Causation, Change and Perspective
Lines of inquiry:
How media provides insight and information
How culture influences media
How audiences interpret and react to media differently
Learner Profile: Open-minded, Communicator, Risk taker
This week in science, we began our unit on waves with a provocation activity. Students were asked to create a wave in the classroom, similar to the waves seen in a stadium. We then explored waves further using ropes and slinkies. Through these activities, students learned about two different types of waves: transverse and longitudinal.
Next week: we will continue learning vocabulary related to waves and explore the relationship between wave motion and wave patterns.
This week we began exploring poems. Students were introduced to poems and how they can be connected to media. As part of the activity, students were asked to identify whether a piece of writing was a poem or not. They were also asked to consider the intended audience and share the feelings or messages the poem was conveying.
Next week: students will be learning about the features of free verse poetry. They will start experimenting with writing their own poems to express ideas creatively.
This week in mathematics, we explored proper, improper, and mixed fractions, and practiced converting between them. Students used hands-on manipulatives and real-world connections to deepen their understanding.
Next week: students we will be learning to add and subtract mixed and improper fractions.
Each Friday, activities will be shared via SeeSaw, including weekly spelling words. Students are expected to return their completed home learning by the following Friday. This can be submitted in one of three ways: directly on SeeSaw, as a physical copy, or in a home learning journal (which we can provide if preferred).
In addition, we highly recommend that students read every day at home. Daily reading builds fluency, strengthens comprehension, and nurtures a lifelong love of books.
Thank you for supporting your child in developing positive and consistent learning habits.
Spelling: Practice your words, we will have a spelling test on Friday.
Maths: Choose your spice level and practice converting improper fractions to mixed numbers, and the other way around. Did you choose 3 spices? Then you have to multiply fractions! Good luck!
Literacy: For grammar, you can choose your spice level and show what you remember about progressive verb tenses. We are looking at past, present and future tenses.
Unit of Inquiry (UOI): For our new unit How We Express Ourselves, we ask that you watch the video about Media. Can you then identify all the types of media you use on a typical day in your life?
