What an amazing first week back we had! It was wonderful to see students return with smiles, full of energy and excitement to reconnect with their friends. There was a real sense of happiness in the classroom as students rebuilt connections and strengthened their friendships.
We also took time to go over important safety measures, including a tour of the school to help students feel confident and secure in their environment. It has been a positive and reassuring start, and we are proud of how quickly students have settled back into their routines.
This week, in UOI, students are learning how to use Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning (CER) to explain their thinking. They are exploring the internal and external structures of frogs, fish, and trees, and how these help them survive in their environments. Students are working on making clear claims, supporting them with evidence, and explaining their reasoning. They are also making connections to how different systems work together to ensure smooth functioning and survival.
Next week: students will choose their own topic and begin preparing their summative task on one of the body systems. They will apply their learning to explain how their chosen system works and how it connects with other body systems. Students will also demonstrate their understanding through research, planning, and creating a final presentation.
Central idea: The human body consists of a network of interconnected systems.
Specified Concepts: Causation, Function and Connection,
Lines of inquiry:
How body systems work
The interconnectedness of body systems
Maintaining a healthy body
Learner Profile: Thinker and Balanced
This week, in Literacy, students took part in a range of exciting Book Week activities, including designing their own book covers and creating twisted endings to familiar stories. They also enjoyed role-swapping and “Book in a Bag” activities, which helped bring stories to life in creative ways. Students explored characters, settings, and plot by acting out and reimagining scenes. In addition, they began their “Design Your Dream Book” project, where they worked as authors and illustrators. They designed book titles, created front covers, wrote persuasive blurbs, and developed engaging opening paragraphs. The unit will end with a fun “book fair” where students will share their final books with their classmates.
Next week: students will begin their summative task by writing a scientific report on a chosen topic related to body systems. They will focus on using scientific vocabulary, linking words, and writing a strong introduction to hook the reader. Students will explain the function of body systems, how they are interconnected, and how they work together in a healthy body. They will also include information on how to maintain a healthy body through lifestyle choices. This task will help students demonstrate their understanding of key science concepts through structured writing.
This week in Math, students explored decimals, percentages, and fractions through hands-on activities and manipulatives. They made connections between the three concepts and developed an understanding of how they are related. Students used visual models to compare and represent values, strengthening their conceptual understanding. They also engaged in problem-solving tasks linked to real-world examples. These activities helped students see how decimals, fractions, and percentages are used in everyday life.
