This course analyses the historical-social phases concerning the evolution of mass-communication media through the study and analysis of basic ideas such as writing, communication and media. After the historical analysis, the focus shifts mainly on the modern and contemporary age, exploring critically the most impor-
tant media-related phenomena such as social media, television, cinema, music, gaming. The course follows the main historical-evolutional phases of the Digital
Revolution, and aims at providing critical discussion about today phenomena connected with technology, communication and media productions.
The programme consists of one single module, which grants 8 credits.
Successful students will be able to:
Explain the evolution of the communication systems form the ancient times to our era
Know the main evolutionary steps in media history
Analyse modern and contemporary media and digital phenomena, putting them in the right historical and social context
Critically asses the links between digital cultures of different origins
History of science from the modern era to information technologies
Transmedia and post-media
Gamification
Social media
The programme focuses on theoretical courses.
Students will take part in the following activities, which may vary depending on the different topics:
