This project seeks to highlight women's voices in the Science Fiction genre, a genre often perceived as lacking non-male perspectives. I discuss how much women's contributions have sculpted the genre into what it is today, and get into the specifics of a few authors and their works. Science fiction is also discussed here as a tool for the empowerment of women, and I discuss specific instances of this. This project also talks about the intersection between feminist science theory and science fiction authored by women, and what this says about speculative fiction written from a feminist angle.
"There is no women's genre in science fiction.” - Octavia Butler
I am Edward Schneider, a senior at Lane Tech. I chose to create this project based on popular perceptions of Science Fiction being a male centered genre, despite the fact that the genre has been in many ways defined by women authored novels. I had recently read The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula LeGuin, and this book and its messaging were a major inspiration for the creation of this project. I am very interested in the use of fiction and fictional works as a a way for effecting change and creating understanding in our world, drawing me to many of the books I talk about in this presentation.
