This project delves into the impact that masculinity and femininity has had on people. Gender expression affects everyone. Whether it be how we dress, act, talk. We all have our perceptions of masculinity and femininity, and our own definitions too. Gender and gender expression has become such an important part of our culture. And is ingrained in many ways in several different ones. But it's not always positive. Gender stereotypes have become harmful, but there are many ways in which we can combat these stereotypes from the very start. This project is mostly based on what people thought and the experiences they chose to share.
My name is Salem and I am a senior here at Lane. I first heard about Ms. Feuer's Women In Lit class last year in her English III class. I knew once I went to my first women in lit fest I'd want to take the class.
As a non-binary person, my life is surrounded by the idea of gender and how I express myself. I knew I wanted to make a project about something so important in my life. As a young child I was made fun of for my own gender, and had many friends who would make bigoted comments towards me, and I thought it was okay. I also knew many others were affected by this, so I wanted to give people a chance to share their thoughts and experiences. I think by starting the conversation sooner than later, especially at a young age, we can undo many of the effects.
