Gender price discrimination is extremely prevalent in today's society. But what exactly are the differences between products that are marketed towards men and women? Is this price difference justified? What are the effects of normalizing these major differences in products?
My name is Leslie, a senior in Women in Lit. I chose this topic for my project because I have always felt very weird about certain advertisements that I see, that oftentimes feel very sexist. Companies purposely up-charging women for the same or similar products as men is not a new concept- many people have recognized this and spoken up about it. I wanted to focus a bit more on the consequences that the difference in the marketing of these products have on men and women. By shining light onto this topic, I hoped to bring awareness to the fact that gender norms are imposed on people from a very young age through advertisements and through the products that are made available for certain groups of individuals. This was also a very interesting topic to research because of the amount of examples that are shown in media and social media.
