Our project focuses on the variety of gender roles/norms, where they come from, and how they impact different groups of people by playing into pre-existing systems of oppression.
Hi, my name is Shivani, and I am a senior. I took this class because I wanted to learn about diverse women in literature and talk about the struggles women face in society. I chose to do this project because, as a woman of color, I noticed the discrepancies between the treatment, portrayal, and expectations of women of color and white women. Growing up, I constantly felt behind because I wasn’t where I was “expected” to be or where other women were. As I talked about it, I realized that I wasn’t alone in my feelings and finally began to understand how systematic the issue was.
Hello! My name is Monica Swierzbinski but you can call me Mon, it's much simpler. I am a senior at Lane! I took Women in Lit because women are absolutely splendid and write amazing literature so, I wanted to learn more.
Growing up, I had no conception of gender and the idea that you didn't have to be subjected to just male or female. Our main idea for our project was to talk about discrimination/gender roles women of color face versus white women. As someone who identifies as non-binary, I have faced some indifferences due to some people not agreeing with who I am (and that's okay, it happens) therefore, I wanted to also include some examples of discrimination non-binary people face in terms of gender roles and some history of the term non-binary.
