My project focuses on the standards placed and stereotypes held against women in the workforce based on their hair textures and skin tones. For the main part of my project, I created a google slide show incorporating prime examples of a lack of curly hair representation in the media, and also statistics proving the poor treatment and discrimination of women strictly because of their hair types.
My name is Sofia, and I am currently a junior at Lane. I have a younger sister named Chloe and an adorable dog named Pippa. I am a proud mixed race woman!
I chose this project because I have struggled personally with acceptance of my curly hair, and more than once felt obligated to straighten my hair to look “more professional” and “more presentable”. Being a black woman in America is hard, and being mixed has not helped with the struggle of finding my identity. I wanted to raise awareness on this issue in our generation, and help people realize how difficult it is to be of a darker skin complexion and have hair that needs more attention, and more specifically how that affects us in life.
