KZNMPSRA 42ND Annual Louis Botha Prestige rugby tournament & Midland rugby festivals

The shift into winter sport on Monday, 9 March brought with it a real sense of anticipation. With just a short window to prepare, our squads moved quickly from conditioning into competitive rugby. A challenge in itself, but one that created genuine excitement about what these groups could become.

Across the KZNMPSRA 42ND Annual Louis Botha Prestige Rugby Tournament and the Midlands rugby festivals, we were reminded just how valuable these platforms are. A sincere thank you must go to the organisers and host schools. The opportunity for our boys to compete, learn, and grow in such well-run environments is something we don’t take for granted. Just as importantly, we were fortunate to come through a demanding weekend with minimal injuries, which is always a major positive at this stage of the season.

Our 1st squad opened their campaign at Merchiston Preparatory School, competing in a highly competitive A-League against strong opposition. While the results on paper (three losses and two draws) may not fully reflect their efforts, the growth within the group was clear. With every game, combinations improved, communication sharpened, and most importantly, a sense of trust and brotherhood began to take shape.

What stood out across all age groups over the weekend was the foundation being laid. The boys showed encouraging progress in key fundamentals:

Saturday saw our programme spread across the Midlands, with teams competing at multiple venues from U9s at Cowan House, U10s at Cordwalles Preparatory School, U11s at Howick Preparatory School, and our open 2nd squad at St. Charles College.

Across all venues, the common thread was grit. The boys competed with heart, embraced the physicality, and showed a willingness to learn from each moment whether in success or under pressure.

Beyond the rugby, there was something equally valuable gained new friendships formed, shared respect between teams and coaches, and the kind of experiences that make these festivals so special. These are the moments that stay with the boys long after the final whistle.

All in all, an exciting start to the season. Plenty to build on, strong foundations in place, and real optimism about what lies ahead.
