Grade 5: Termly Reflection
Having moved into our brand-new classrooms in July 2025, we welcomed our 2026 Grade 5s into this beautiful, fresh and spacious space of which we are enormously proud.
Two classes, totaling, thirty-six children entered with excitement and trepidation. Mr. Wagner and Mrs. Lowe welcomed them warmly.
The ‘special feature’ of the new classrooms is the retractable adjoining wall which allows us to open the two classrooms into a one large classroom where all the Grade 5s can work together and the teachers can team teach. We also spill out onto our spacious covered verander which gives us a whole extra teaching and learning space.
We have also enjoyed the added advantage of being a stones-throw from top woods; a happy destination for many Grade 5s.
With the clearing of the massive gum and yellowwood trees, behind our classroom, we watched the aloes, shrubs and grasses slowly cover the bare soil. Bird watching in Top Woods and in this new eco-system has been a rewarding Outdoor activity. The sunbirds are particularly prolific in the red-hot-pokers growing in the ‘veld’.
Our Natural Science themes of Rocks, Soil, and Fossils always ignite new interests and knowledge. A secret source of crystals has been discovered in the ‘veld’. First, by hands and then inevitably with spades our intrepid explorers have spend many Break times digging and celebrating their finds.
We planted up a garden, in the hollow of a large log, at the entrance to the Top Wood’s Path. It’s thriving! We look forward to kikuyu covering the flat area between us and the woods as this is going to be a great area to extend our classroom and it also doubles as a mini cricket pitch before school and at Breaks.
Beyblades, Pokemon cards, Hopscotch and Among Us have been the games of Term 1.
Settling in to new teachers, new routines and new academic expectations has been an adjustment.
Term 1 is done.
We now are one.
Grade 5s, teachers and children, look forward to much, much more to come in 2026.
