Curatorial Rationale
Throughout grade 11 and 12, I have chosen the theme base in “myself” which allowed me to complete all the artworks within these 2 years. Since grade 10, I have been interested in working on artworks. During grade 10, I have been inspired by Jackson Pollock which I also got the idea to apply to during grade 11 and 12. Pollock's artwork inspired me because of how his artwork looks and his passion towards art. Throughout the research of him since I chose the topic of EE about Jackson Pollock, the research helped me a lot for this art class because, before creating any art piece I have some knowledge about Jackson Pollock. Throughout this 2 years, I have made 5 artworks which will also be submitted in the exhibition. Within the 5 artworks, I have based some of the artworks on Jackson Pollock. Through these experiences, I had the ability to work on the artwork with the theme of “myself”.
Firstly, I created the artwork which is related to Jackson Pollock. I worked on splatter paint, which shapes a man playing soccer. This shape represents me playing soccer and my passion towards sports, mainly on soccer. Another artwork that relates to soccer is the “Four season”. This art piece was painted with the technique “impasto” which is painted thickly on the surface so that the strokes of the brush will be shown. The “Four season” relates to soccer also because the soccer field is painted with four different seasons which are: summer, winter, spring, and autumn. Soccer field with four seasons represents my passion towards soccer because this evokes that I am playing soccer throughout the whole year. I have also applied the technique impasto in “Osaka Bridge”. This artwork is the most recent artwork that I have done. The “Osaka Bridge” was one of the most time consuming artwork that I have done. I have chosen to apply impasto again for this artwork because, after applying impasto technique for the “four season” it inspired me to work for another impasto technique. When working on the “Osaka Bridge”, I have noticed that it requires a lot of bright colors and amount of paints. Since I painted this artwork on a big canvas, it required a big amount of paint since I am also applying impasto technique which will need a thick layer of paint. The concept of this artwork “Osaka Bridge” is that, since the theme is about “Myself” I chose to create a artwork of where I was born and grew up. Osaka was the place I grew up and feel most comfortable living in. For the artwork “Question mark” which was done in collage was one of the artwork that I have never tried before. Before I start creating new artwork, I have always researched types of art technique which I can get ideas from. When I was looking through the different art techniques, I found the technique collage. For this artwork, I have pasted newspwer and magazines to create the shape of the question mark. The reason why I chose the specific shape “question mark” is because I wonder all the time in both academics and even during my daily life. I have noticed that I am always wondering certain things. This artwork came from my curiosity and uncertainty of how life is. The 5th artwork is the “Abstract sculpture” this sculpture is made with all wood which is painted with different colors. For this artwork, I decided to illustrate nature. For example, the color red represents the sun and heat, blue is the sky, orange is the sunlight/sunset, green describes the grass, forest and field and yellow describes the flower.
