The Box Illusion
Gouache on watercolor paper, 22.5 x 19.5 inches
Illusions have always been a key concept of art as illustrations have allowed artists to depict objects that were impossible to create in real life. The Reutersvard tribar is an optical illusion which deceives viewers upon first glance. It’s difficult to comprehend the order in which the boxes flow because they overlap one another. I wanted to express the beauty of illusion and how it can be hidden in plain sight and in this illustration there is a star in the center of the boxes.
