Distinction

Oil pastel on rice paper, 61.4 x 46.2 cm

Distinction illustrates the idea that different people impact us. The different colors on the face represent different groups of people and how they make up the person’s external self. It represents the idea of Social Identity theory through how our identity is determined by our different group memberships. This piece draws influence from Lucien Freud’s “Girl in a Striped Nightshirt” and Henri Matisse’s “Portrait of André Derain”, who uses distinct strokes as building blocks for the portrait.
