Semester Course
It is highly desirable for any student considering studying either Food Science and Technology General or the Certificate II in Hospitality in Year 11 to complete this course in Year 10. This pathway leads into careers in the food industry, health, nutrition or food science.
This course is designed to enhance skills in food production, presentation and food service. Students will be given the opportunity to prepare food for themselves and others, as every day meals and those for special occasions and gift giving. Students will:
Use the Technology process to investigate, devise, produce, and evaluate foods according to case studies and food related challenges;
Learn about the nutrient content of foods and different dietary food choices;
Learn about sustainability issues in food production.
Learn about digestion and the importance in gut health.
Further develop their skills in correct selection and use of a variety of food related equipment;
Further develop effective skills in food preparation and service through preparation of allocated and self chosen recipes;
Demonstrate understanding of food hygiene.
Semester Course
This course is highly desirable for any student considering the future pathway of Children, Family and Community, General course in Years 11 and 12. This pathway leads into careers in childcare, nursing, teaching, childcare, sociology or psychology.
The Year 10 Child Care course is an introduction into the growth and development of children and the interactions between families and their communities. Students will study a variety of different topics such as:
Prenatal development and childbirth
Physical, social, emotional and cognitive development of children
Childcare services and welfare
Nutrition for children
Families
Play
This course is a theoretical based course with practical components included and students will have the opportunity to develop an understanding of the developing child using research skills and hands on experience. Students will prepare meals for young children as well as making toys and activities that assist in child development. Students will be required to take part in the ‘Real-care’ virtual baby program where they care for a baby over a 24 hour period.
