Research is a careful and detailed study of a particular problem or concern, using scientific methods. It is because in-depth analysis of information creates space for generating new questions, concepts and understandings. Thus, the main objective of research is to explore the unknown and unlock new possibilities.
The actual research begins with the formulation of a research problem. It makes us well aware of the tasks that we have to perform in order to accomplish the research. Research is a process that needs to be completed in a sequence. A research problem helps us formulate that sequence. Research problem also helps us avoid unnecessary steps during the research.
Furthermore, the research problem should have great clarity since the research process in itself generates more questions. In the absence of a clear and well defined research problem the researcher can become confused. In addition the research question or research problem should have to be interesting so that the researcher become well engaged in the research.
The purpose of the research problem is to determine the objective and intention of the research, in the absence of an aim or objective researchers cannot determine the research methodology. A research problem helps identify each and every step of the research process: the study design, sampling strategy, research instrument and research analysis.
Well-defined objectives of research are an essential component of successful research engagement. The objectives of research should be closely related to the problem statement, giving way to specific and achievable goals. Here are the two types of research objectives that needs to be incorporated in a study:
General Objective - Also known as secondary objectives, general objectives provide a detailed view of the aim of a study. In other words, researchers get a general overview of what researchers want to achieve by the end of the study.
Specific Objectives - Specific objectives define the primary aim of the study. Typically, general objectives provide the foundation for identifying specific objectives. In other words, when general objectives are broken down into smaller and logically connected objectives, they’re known as specific objectives. They help define the who, what, why, when and how aspects of your project. Once researchers identify the main objective of research, it’s easier to develop and pursue a plan of action.
A research agenda identifies research priorities which will lead to more successful research, outlining a clear framework for making decisions about future research activities. Research agenda help researchers understand and view the research work that they do. They are comprised of a strand (or possibly two or three related ones) of research that researchers explore. These may be topics or questions that the research seeks to explore.
The CLO4 entailed ways on how to identify a research problem and objectives (both general and specific). The synchronous class conducted had made me realize that there is a distinction between a topic and a poblem in research context. A topic is something that needs to be solved or framed as quetion raised for inquiry, consideration, and solution. Also, I learned that a research problem is comprised of a definite and clear expression about the researcher's area of concern. Thus, when there is an absence of a research problem, most likely the research plan will be vagued and non-economical. In addition, there are considerations when selecting a research problem. These include relevance of the topic, availability of data, ethical issues, interest about the proposed topic, magnitude, measurement of concepts, and level of expertise. With these, I learned that every problem statement created should frame the existing research problem. The CLO als discussed steps on how to generate research questions. Lastly, I realized that there must be a difference between main and sub-objectives. Main objectives refers to an overall statement of the study, while Sub-Objectives are the specific aspects of the topic that every researcher needs to investigate within the research study's main framework. Every sub-objectives should be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-bound).
