Engineers are always expected to perform numerous tasks depending on their job skills and level. In order to execute their tasks in an effective and efficient manner, it is important for every engineer to be aware of what is expected of him. It is not uncommon for engineers to have difficulties on how to socialize with colleagues and subordinates as some may still lack people based-skills. For an engineer manager to do his job well, then exposure to engineering management activities must be taken into action.
Here are the global issues that every engineers should solve and combat with:
Food scarcity
Elimination of air and water pollution'
Solid waste disposal
Noise pollution
Increasing energy demand
Increasing demand for mobility
Preventing crimes
Increasing demand for communication facilities
The functions of engineering encompasses the following areas, which are as follows:
Research - Vigor learning of usable theories
Design and Development - Turning a product into a finished, usable item
Testing - Examining products' workability
Manufacturing - Directly in-charge of production personnel
Construction - Responsibility for the quality of construction process
Sales - Assisting customers or clients to meet their needs
Consultation - Working as a consultant of an individual or organization requiring his services
Government - Performing various tasks for both public and private institutions
Teaching - Assigned as a teacher in engineering courses
Management - Managing groups of people performing specific tasks
Organizations can be classified according to the degree of engineering jobs performed:
LEVEL ONE

Organizations with minimal engineering jobs like retailing firms

Organizations with moderate degree of engineering jobs like transportation companies

Engineering management refers to the activity combining "technical knowledge with the ability to organize and coordinate worker power, materials, machinery, and money".
In order for engineer managers to be technically competent with their jobs, they should have atleast prior experience and knowledge on their specialized jobs. Therefore, management is always necessary.
Management is defined as the "creative problem solving process of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling an organization's objectives to achieve its mission and objectives."
Management is also a process comprised of different functions. namely - planning, organizing, directing/leading, and controlling.
The engineer manager must have these following qualifications depending on service type or products that a firm produces:
A bachelor's degree in engineering from a reputable school. Sometimes a Master's degree in engineering or business management is also required.
Few years experience in an engineering job
Training in supervision
Must undergo special training in engineering management
Lastly, it is important for engineer managers to know the general preconditions or factors that will lead them to succesful management, which are as follows:
Ability - It refers to the capacity of an engineer manager to achieve organizational objectives effectively and efficiently.
Motivation to manage - Aside from the desire to work and finish various tasks, engineer managers should also motivate their subordinates in order to effectively meet the organizations' objectives
Opportunity - Engineer managers having the ability and motivation will always be given the opportunity to manage.

After watching the video that was presented by the first group, I have grasped and was able to relate the importance of engineering management for our future profession. As we all know, engineering is comprised of various fields, a complex blend of specialized knowledge which integrates the scientific approach, math, design, and construction applications in order to provide valuable innovations for the benefit of society. As engineering students, it is vitally important for us to take impart the knowledge and insights that we've gained on the introduction to engineering management, for we might be experiencing some difficulties on the overall development and completion of engineering projects as we'll be immersing ourselves in different engineering tasks.
