At the end of the course, the students are expected to write a case study about household energy and water consumption. This is to help them in applying their knowledge and skills on what was taught throughout the course to assess residential units according to green building standards, by simply identifying energy and water-saving methods that will improve overall efficiency and sustainability of a building.
Listed below are the steps that I have used in writing my case study:
The introduction should serve as a roadmap for the readers to ascertain the scope and purpose of your study. The introduction to a case study research paper, however, should not only describe the research problem and its significance, but will succinctly describe why the case is being used and how it relates to addressing the problem.
The review of related literature is focused on providing background information and enabling historical interpretation of the subject of analysis in relation to the research problem the case is intended to address. This usually involve summarizing studies that have used a similar subject of analysis to investigate the research problem.
In this section the researcher will explain why did the researcher select the particular case [i.e., subject of analysis] and the strategy used to identify and ultimately decide that the case was appropriate in addressing the research problem. The way that the researcher describe the methods used varies depending on the type of subject of analysis that constitutes the case study.
The data analysis centers around interpreting and drawing conclusions about the key findings from analysis of the case study. The data analysis section should include explanation of the findings, and acknowledging the limitations of the case study.
This section summarize the significant outcomes of the study in clear, simple language; emphasize how the findings from the case study differs from or supports prior case studies.
The function of the paper's conclusion and recommendation is to: a.) reiterate the main argument supported by the findings from your case study; b.) state clearly the context, background, and necessity of pursuing the research problem using a case study design in relation to an issue, controversy, or a gap found from reviewing the literature; and, c.) provide a place to persuasively and succinctly restate the significance of research problem.
After completing my case study about energy and water management, I have gained lots of realizations and takeaways in conserving energy and water in a single household. First, I learned that simply following and applying the energy & water-saving measures at home are highly significant for it also contributes to reducing energy demand and carbon footprint (aside from saving additional costs and deductibles due to expensive water and electricity bills). Second, this serves also as a preparatory for my upcoming research methods next semester. Lastly, conducting a case study on how to reduce energy and water consumption helped me to improve my skills and knowledge further when it comes to green assessment and audit. I learned that one of the best ways to save energy is to cut down on wasting it. Also I realized that I should maximize the use of natural lighting and ventilation in order to maintain perfect heat, ventilation and lighting conditions during broad daylight and keep energy use at the optimum level at the same time.
