Copying someone else's structure, the structure of words and ideas withour giving due credit are also considered as plagiarized and may affect the originality and credibility of work. Due to enormous field of information that can be found online, plagiarism has been a never ending concern in ethical research.
Therefore, the capstone project should be carried out in respect of the practices and ethical principles appropriate to each discipline. As engineering students, it is always necessary to embrace the ethics and morality of the profession and be responsible at all times, taking actions and respecting the fundamental values.
Every engineering student should be honest at all times in all aspects of capstone project. Since the ethical principles of research involves the professional rules, norms, and obligations per engineering field, engineering students should carry out their project proposal without being tainted by plagiarism
For example, after we cited and acknowledge different sources for Chapter 2, we make sure that the Chapter is plagiarism free by checking it via software or plagiarism removal services
Also, for us to avoid plagiarism once detected in the paper, we rewrote the chapter that we checked and cited either by using a different choice of words without affecting the originality and understanding of the capstone project.
After writing the Chapter 2, which discusses review of related literature and studies, I have checked whether if I have committed plagiarism by checking the paper first using plagiarism checker feature on grammarly. Upon checking, the plagiarized level has reached more than 20% of the copied text. Although the citations are right, plagiarized texts remained high due to similarity to the structure and flow of words. In order to solve this problem, I paraphrased it based on my own understanding of the quotations and gave reference to the original author. After committing this mistake. I have learned that every publications or technical papers should be plagiarism free, or atleast must be less than 5% in terms of plagiarism level. This is one way of giving not only the credit but the respect that the original author deserves when citing his/her source. This made me realize that it is unethical to turn in someone else's work without proper permission. Also, after encountering that problem, that allowed me to become more conscious whether if I plagiarized the text or not.
