This Course Learning Outcome entails how engineering students will hone not only the leadership skills, and sophisticated skills in writing and crafting a capstone project proposal, but their interpersonal and communication skills as well.
The CE Project 1 course is not limited only in writing the manuscript (Chapters 1 to 3). Also, it should be reminded that students must be able to defend their thesis by presenting their capstone project during title defense.
Aside from that, every engineering student should have the courage in initiating on finding errors and faulty gaps in the design process. Having a constant communication with his/her researchmates, instructors, adviser, and experts related to the field of research is vitally important.
Meticulous brainstorming with other co-researchmates is always required in the subject course. This is where interpersonal skills come in. Advanced interpersonal skills not only by the research leader but also to his/her members contribute to the fruitful and productive outcome of the project.
Apart from these, having a good interpersonal skills will create a lasting bonds between group members, which in turn, enables them to execute their individual tasks properly and harmoniously. The commendable interpersonal skills will create a mutual and beneficial relationships among the team members.
Also, having such skills allowed me to have access to scholarly journals by communicating with other researchers conducting studies similar to our current capstone project.
For example, in our group, we frequently conduct presentation rehearsals prior to the title defense. Consultation meetings as well allowed us to converse and exchange some ideas and suggestions with our research advisers and instructors.
Therefore, it is evident that interpersonal and leadership skills are indispensable in this course subject. For us to present our capstone proposal effectively during title defense, we should possess exceptional interpersonal skills and be an effective communicator to everyone. This can be made possible by having a good camaraderie within the group.
Starting from Week 1 of this course, I was able to foster my bond along with my researchmates. We were spending some overnights revising and editing the manuscript and preparing ourselves for the title defense. We also conducted online meetings together with our advisers and communicate with them constantly either via group chats or personally communicating with them.
Developing interpersonal and communication skills isn't hard at all. It is because I am actively participating in organizational activities spearheaded by PICE and DOST. Also, my members were my friends as well. We constantly chatting with one another and brainstorm our ideas for the capstone project as a group. Also, it wasn't hard for me to effectively communicate with my instructors and advisers, for they are very approachable and accommodating persons. They provide us with our necessities to make our capstone project succesful. This made me realize that interpersonal skills are very important as these will avoid conflicts, fosters and encourages team building and relationship building with other persons. Indeed our capstone project is a multidisciplinary one, but my co-members and I were able to harmonize the differences in expertise by possessing and employing our good interpersonal skills. This helped us to be more motivated despite the complexity of our capstone project, and was able to facilitate teamwork effectively.
