Green Building Standard refers to a model code or green building rating system that serves as either national or international platform for recognition and advancement of green building. The concept of green building, which applies environmentally sensitive design and construction techniques to reduce energy and water consumption and improve residential comfort/safety, has moved rapidly into the mainstream. It is also became known for its point based system, wherein a project can attain points and certification depending on the sustainable and green practices employed in a building starting from design and construction until its operation & maintenance phase.
The Philippine Green Building Code is comprised of incremental green building assessment procedures. These include the following assessment procedures:
For Building Permit Process:
• Checking for completeness of documents for the application of Building Permit
• Inclusion of Green Building Code measures as embedded in Technical Drawings and Specifications
• Evaluation of Building Permit Codes by the Building Official including Green Building Code measures under appropriate disciplines
• Approval of Green Building documents. Upon approval, building permit shall be issued.
For Occupancy Clearance Process:
• Submission of Application form to the Office of Local Building Official
• Inspection of completed building and evaluation of submitted documents (must include ocular inspection of building and building envelope systems)
• Review of Green Building documents for approval of occupancy application
• Issuance of Occupancy Clearance
Practical assessment and evaluation for green building standards refers to complete description and inspection of green building functions according to the definition set by the said standard. It can be used to rate and evaluate differences between as-built buildings and definition-based green buildings. This takes emphasis on green building evaluation systems such as energy saving, land-saving, water saving, materials-saving and environment protection.
After answering the classwork assignment, I realized that green building practices can substantially reduce or eliminate negative environmental impacts through high-performance,construction, and green operations practices. It is because green home building movement, which applies environmentally sensitive design and construction techniques are becoming a trend nowadays. Understanding the topics thoroughly helped me to critically analyze and find solutions on how to minimize energy use, conserve and protect water, enhance environmental indoor quality, which I considered to be cost-effective and highly significant in reducing life cycle costs. Also, applying the concepts of green building procedures paved way for me to create my own green building strategies that will ensure a green, affordable, and climate resilient house without compromising the health and safety of the occupants.
