Mad About Minibeasts

Don't forget to share some of your photos or videos via Tapestry or 2Simple. You can also email eyfs@asasps.org. We are looking forward to seeing some of your creations and your completed activities this week!

This week, we would like you to think about minibeasts. Can you name them, find them and find out to facts about them?

  • Can you go on a minibeast hunt in your garden or somewhere close to where you live? Where is the best place to find them do you think?

  • Can you name any of the minibeasts that you find ? Perhaps you could take some photos of any that you find....they may come in handy later this week!

  • Using the letters in the words caterpillar and ladybird, what other words can you make? Make a list of the words you can find?

  • Can draw or paint or maybe use chalks outside to draw a minibeast or make up your own creepy crawly? Can you add labels to your picture to name different parts of it's body . Remember to include shape and colour words.

  • This is a super book full of wonderful minbeast rhymes. Can you share it with an adult and pick out the rhyming words in each little poem ?

  • Can you choose some of the minibeasts from the book and think of a way to make a craft version? You could use playdough if you have it, or a paper plate, junk material like kitchen rolls or even straws or lollipop sticks . We would love to see what you can come up with!!

  • Who fancies having a go at designing (drawing) or making their very own bug hotel. Here is a picture of a really superb one ! Yours doesn't have to be like this, but it may help you with some ideas about what to include

  • Can you move like a minibeast? Use the prompts above to help you! Perhaps you could create a dance or a sequence of minibeast movements? Add music or even a costume!!

  • If you have your own photos of a minibeast you have found (or any printed or drawn ) could you name it and include a word with the same beginning sound to describe it, such as Bonnie the beautiful butterfly - don't forget to use your phonics when you are word building!

  • Use the book to help you choose a particular creature and record the name of it. Are you then able to think of another object that may rhyme with it, such as ant and pants. Maybe you could have a go at making a rhyming sentence using your phonics, such as ants in my pants or perphaps use drawings or pictures to show rhyming pairs?

  • Watch this lovely version of The Creation Story, it teaches us how God made the world and all the living things in it. Are you able to think about the order of the days and which parts of the world God made during each of them? Can you show us what you have remembered without using words (think about modelling, drawing, using small world figures, materials)

  • Here is a clumsy caterpillar, he has lost some numbers in his body!, Can you think about the order of numbers and which are bigger, smaller, greater or less than to complete sequences and fill his body back up?

  • Have a look at the minibeast Power Point. Can you listen to the clues and work out which minibeast is hiding?

  • Perhaps you could make up your own set of 3 clues to describe your favourite kind of minibeast? Remember to use facts that you know such as where they live of how many legs they have! Perhaps you could record a video of your clues or use your phonics to write them down ?!

  • Listen to this number pattern song, all about counting in 2's., it's really catchy!! I wonder if anybody can learn the tune and perform it, remembering all the numbers in the correct order

  • As an extra counting challenge, how many pairs of household items can you find in your home? Could you make a line with them and make your own number cards to count in 2's and show us how many items you have managed to find?

  • There are some lovely interactive activities on this website. Use your knowledge to sort minibeasts, identify where they are hiding and answer questions about them

  • Please don't forget to log on to NUMBOTS , it's a really fun way to help keep your maths brain busy!!!

  • Find a way to record your numbers without using paper, a pencils, chalk or a screen/ tablet. We challenge you to find the most creative way for practicing your number formation 0-20!
