Hi everyone!
I hope you all had a chance to enjoy this beautiful weekend! It looks like the sunshine is here to stay for the next couple of days. Please try to help your child remember to bring a filled water bottle to school-- they will have lots of time to run around outside!
Here are some things to look forward to this week:
No School Wednesday, 11/11-- Veteran's Day!
Remote Work: Please help your child to remember to put their completed remote work into their Take Home Folder to return to school. I do collect these assignments, check off if they're completed, and provide feedback to students using them. This week, students will bring home:
a double sided math practice page (Day 1 Remote Work)
a word study packet with new pattern words and a sorting mat (Day 1 Remote Work)
Social Studies "X Marks the Spot" Election Day activity (Day 1 Remote Work)
Show, Not Tell Writing Activity (Day 1 Remote Work)
Science: Adaptations of Desert Animals (Day 2 Remote Work)
There are additional online assignments linked to the remote schedule that your child should complete. Be sure to check your child's Take Home Folder when they come home from school to read my feedback on their turned-in assignments.
**New this week**: I have begun highlighting certain “MUST DO AND SUBMIT” assignments on the remote schedule (in purple). These assignments should be a main focus during your child’s remote days and should be completed and submitted to me on their next in person day (unless it is a Google Classroom assignment-- that can just be “turned in” on GC). This does not mean that all other assignments are optional, this just means that I’m expecting students will spend more energy on completing the highlighted ones. This is an opportunity for students who have been struggling to complete remote learning assignments to start small and build up to completing all of them as the year goes on. If your child completes other assignment, they should turn those in to me too!
Curriculum Night: I'm looking forward to seeing you all on Zoom at 7:15 PM this Tuesday, 11/10 for Curriculum Night! During this time, I will give an overview of our school day and the curriculum we use in third grade, remote learning information, and tips to support your child at home. If you have particular questions that you know you'd like answered during this time, please enter them into this survey.
Here is the link to the Zoom Meeting you should join for Curriculum Night. We only have 30 minutes together, so I will plan to begin right at 7:15.

Here's a peek into what we did in school last week:
Math: Students practiced finding the area of different sized rectangles using square tiles and multiplying dimensions. Students also practiced finding the product of bigger arrays by breaking them into two smaller, more well-known arrays.
Example: 7x9=(5x9) + (2x9)
Writing: We began learning some new strategies to use when you can't think of a true story to write about. These two strategies are:
think of an important person, list small moment memories involving them, choose one, and write a story
think of an important place, map out the memories you have there, choose one, and write a story
This week, students will continue choosing new seed story ideas while learning about how to write with explicit details.
Reading: Students learned about how readers pause and ask important questions to help them make sense of what's going on. These questions often start with prompts such as: "How could?" or "Why did?". Students also began exploring a new app called Lexia Core5 that provides explicit instruction and practice with six literacy competencies: phonological awareness, phonics, structural analysis, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Students will have consistent ongoing opportunities to use this app in school and during remote learning this year.
Science: We received some new friends in our classroom last week-- the crayfish! Last week, students got to say "hello" to the crayfish and began learning about different types of animal adaptations. We will be studying and observing the crayfish over the next few weeks to deepen our understanding of animal structures and adaptations.
Social Studies: We continued on with our unit about Government and Voting by learning about the process of getting involved in the government. Students learned about the requirements to become president, the names of the two main parties in our government, and some of the steps of running for president (nomination, getting the word out about ideas and beliefs, rallies, debates, and election). Next week, we'll dive more into the topic of voting.
That's all for now! Have a great day!
Ms. McLellan
