Week 10: 11/23-11/25

Hi everyone,

We're in the home stretch to Thanksgiving Break! Here's a peek into what this week will look like:

This Week's Remote Learning Schedule: It is important to note that all students will be learning from home Monday-Wednesday this week. Each day's schedule will feature a mixture of synchronous instruction and independent work. Students should be logged into Zoom by 8:15 am and should expect to continue their learning day through 2:30 PM on Monday and Tuesday, and through 11:30 AM on Wednesday. Students will need to transition between different Zoom links throughout the day (P.E., a few different Community Celebrations, first grade buddies), so they may need some help with this!

Remote Work: Please help your child to remember to put their completed remote work into their Take Home Folder to return to school. I do collect these assignments, check off if they're completed, and provide feedback to students using them. This week, students will bring home:

  • Array City materials (grid paper, building cutouts, black construction paper (Monday Remote Work)

  • Fall Reading Wreath Materials (wreath template, packet of wreath decals) (Monday Remote Work)

  • You Be the Historian Checklist (Tuesday Remote Work)

  • Trick Words Spelling Packet (Tuesday Remote Work)

  • Aliens Inherited Traits Packet (Wednesday Remote Work)

  • Thanksgiving Fun Pages (Wednesday Remote Work)

This Week's Projects: Students will be completing a few different projects this week at home and will need some extra materials in addition to the materials I sent them home with. Students should come to each day's Zoom session with a pencil, scissors, glue stick or tape (preferably both), and coloring materials.

On Wednesday, students will work on a project that involves blowing up a balloon. It may be helpful to blow your child's balloon up in advance (in their Take Home Folders).

There is no school Thursday or Friday-- Happy Thanksgiving!

Here's a peek into what we did in school last week:

Math: We began exploring how to solve division story problems. When presented with a story problem, students think about the information they are given, and which information they need to figure out. Visit this Math Words and Ideas page to see how we're solving them! There is an explanation video on page 3!

Writing: Students selected a "seed story" idea and began writing their first draft of what will soon be a published personal narrative. We then studied different types of leads and students practiced using different "hook" techniques.

Reading: Students practiced answering text-based questions (making predictions, naming character traits, summarizing, analyzing author's craft). They studied the benchmarks that third grade readers should be meeting and analyzed how their work matches up to the benchmarks.

Science: Students studied some crayfish behaviors by seeing how they react when their antennae are touched, when you put a house in their habitat, when you put another crayfish with them, etc. Next week, we'll begin studying inherited traits.

That's all for now! Enjoy this short week and have a Happy Thanksgiving!
