Week 17: 1/19-1/22

Hi everyone,

I hope you're enjoying this sunny, long weekend! Here are few upcoming things to look forward to:

Schedule Change: Please note that due to this Monday holiday, Cohort A students will be attending school in person Tuesday and Friday. Cohort B will only be attending school in person on Thursday. Cohort B students should participate in asynchronous remote learning on Tuesday and Friday. Please let me know if you have any questions about this!

This Week's Remote Work: Please help your child to remember to put their completed remote work into their Take Home Folder to return to school. I collect these assignments, check off if they're completed, and provide feedback to students using them. There are several highlighted assignments on this week's remote schedule. These assignments are "must-do" assignments and should be completed during your child's remote learning days. This week, the "must-do" assignments are:

  • Math practice pages-- "Finding Numbers on the 1,000 Chart" & "Addition and the 700 Chart" (day 1 remote work)

  • Word Study written word sort-- "Effects of /w/ and /qu/ on 'a'" (day 1 remote work)

  • Dreambox (days 1 and 2 remote work)

  • Math choices -- Deca Tree, Close to 100, Capture 5 (day 2 remote plans)

  • Lexia Core 5 (day 2 remote work)

Virtual Writer's Celebration: We are putting the finishing touches on our personal narratives and the kids are excited to share them with all of you! Please pencil us in on Zoom for Wednesday, February 3rd from 9-9:30 am! More info coming soon!

Dreambox and Lexia Core 5: Please be sure to encourage the use of Dreambox and Lexia Core 5 at home! I list them as "Must Do" assignments each week on the remote schedule, but I'm noticing not everyone is logging in for the required time. The goal is to accomplish at least one hour of practice on each app every week to work on foundational math and literacy skills. I will reinforce this in school as well.

Here's a peek into what we've been doing in school!

Math: We have been working with numbers between 1-1,000 and thinking about the relationship between these numbers. Students have practiced ordering numbers and thinking about what place value tells us when comparing two numbers.

Writing: We began a new writing unit focused on animal research. All students selected an animal and began researching interesting facts using different online research engines. We then began organizing our research into categories which will later turn into chapters. In this unit, there will be a big focus on how to research effectively and how to appropriately write about research.

Reading: Students practiced "revving up their minds" before reading from a big collection of nonfiction articles. Some topics they read about were the longest words in the world, the most notable art heists, and the weirdest foods eaten around the globe. We also practiced making mini summaries of chunks of text by naming the topic and listing some important details that match.

Science: We reviewed noticing patterns within data sets and practiced reading a set of data about where to find different bugs!

Social Studies: We spent some time learning about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We read a book about his childhood written by his sister called "My Brother, Martin", and we watched some of the highlights of his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. This week, we're going to learn a bit about the history of presidential inaugurations!

I hope you all have a wonderful week!

Ms. McLellan
