Hi everyone,
I hope you're enjoying this beautiful 3-day weekend! Here are some things to keep in mind this week:
Remote Learning Work: Please remind your child to check their white "Take Home Folder" for remote learning work that I sent home. Anything inside the pocket labeled "remote work" will be assigned on our remote learning schedule for this week and should be completed and returned to school on your child's next in person day. This week, students brought home:
a double sided math practice page (pgs 15&16) -- to be completed on Day 1 of remote learning
Arlington Landmarks recording packet (and green "X Marks the Spot" bookmark) -- to be completed on Day 1 of remote learning
Three 100's charts -- to be completed during our Wednesday Zoom session
Cohort A only: "Odd One Out" activity-- to be completed on Day 2 of remote learning
Cohort A only: "My 5 Senses in Fall" activity-- to be completed on Day 2 of remote learning
Please note that there are additional assignments to be completed online listed on this week's "Remote Learning Schedule" (on Google Classroom). The pages I send home are things that should be completed by hand!
Book Bags and Reading Logs: Students started checking out books from my classroom library last week and are allowed to bring them home to continue reading. Students also will bring home a reading log each day to fill in their reading habits each time they read. Please help your child to remember to fill out their reading logs and to bring their book bags with their books and logs to school each day.
Photo Permission: I would love to start posting pictures of some of the awesome things we've been doing in school to our "Work Gallery" page. Please complete this Photo Permission form when you get a chance!
Scholastic Book Orders: Please visit the "Important Links" page for info on ordering books through Scholastic.com!
Here's a peek into what we did in third grade last week:
Math: Given various story problems, students practiced drawing pictures, writing sentences using mathematical information, solving the problems using different strategies, and writing connecting multiplication equations.
Writing: We continued our poetry unit by learning how to break sentences down into their bare bones using descriptive words and line breaks. We also started studying similes and metaphors!
Reading: Students started making plans to make their reading lives the best they can be at home and in school. We also started keeping reading logs so we can check in on our reading habits throughout the year. At home, students started to review some of the spelling patterns they learned in 2nd grade using an interactive whiteboard app, Jamboard!
Social Studies: We began exploring some landmarks right in Arlington! In school, students learned about The Jason Russell House, Spy Pond, and Old Schwamb Mill. At home this week, students will learn about Robbins Library, The Minuteman Bikeway, and Cyrus E. Dallin (not a landmark, but important nonetheless :) ).
Science: At home last week, students dissected some fruit and observed the properties of different types of seeds. Then they went on to learn about about the life cycle of a seed. In school, students got to select a seed type (sunflower, bush bean, pea, or corn) to plant! We will check in on our seeds weekly to observe how they're growing.
That's all for now. Have a great week!
Ms. McLellan
