Hi everyone,
Happy belated Halloween! I hope you and your families had a great time celebrating Halloween this year. I bet your celebrations looked pretty different than normal. I can't wait to hear all about it this week!
Here are some things to look forward to this week:
No School--Tuesday, 11/3! : This also means Cohort B is not required to complete remote assignments. Enjoy the day off!
Remote Work: I will be giving students a packet of work to work on during their remote learning days. Each assignment is labeled with the day it should be completed and matches up with an assignment on the remote learning schedule. Please help your child to remember to put their completed remote work into their Take Home Folder to return to school. I do collect these assignments, check off if they're completed, and provide feedback to students using them. This week, students will bring home:
a double sided math practice page (Day 1 Remote Work)
a word study packet with new pattern words and a sorting mat (Day 1 Remote Work)
a new writer's notebook and directions to decorate the front cover (Day 1 Remote Work-- must be returned to school next day)
an "apple trapper" planning page with a green piece of paper and 4 white pieces of paper to go with a Mystery Science activity (Day 2 Remote Work-- Cohort A only)
Finding the Area math packet (Wednesday Zoom)
a baggie of square foam tiles (Wednesday Zoom-- must be returned to school next day)
Word Bowl Poetry words (Wednesday Zoom)
There are additional online assignments linked to the remote schedule that your child should complete. Please note that none of these assignments are optional! I will be reaching out in the coming weeks to provide each family with some quick feedback about remote work. Be sure to check your child's Take Home Folder when they come home from school to read my feedback on their turned-in assignments.
Curriculum Night-- 11/10!: I hope to "see" you all during our Curriculum Night next week on 11/10! To help me prepare to answer your questions, please take a moment and complete this Google Form! The time of our session is TBA!
Here's what we did in third grade last week!:
Math: We began studying a new type of multiplication representation: arrays. Students explored how to arrange a number of chairs in equal rows and then began making their own set of array cards. You'll be seeing these cards come home soon to play some remote games! Here's a reference page to help you learn more about arrays.
Writing: We began our next writing unit, Crafting True Stories. In this unit, students will be writing small moment personal narratives. We're starting out by learning about how third graders keep a writer's notebook. These will be coming home this week to be decorated on Day 1 of Remote Learning!
Reading: Students learned how to create a simple summary by using the trick: Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then. After reading a short book or a section of a longer book, students should be able to stop, name the main character, explain what they want the most, identify the problem, show how the character tries to solve the problem, and explain how the story ends. We will be using this summarizing strategy throughout the year.
Science: Students picked an experiment to pursue while we plant the seeds that have begun to sprout. By keeping a control plant and having another plant with one changed variable, students will observe how factors such as sunlight, water amount, and soil can help a plant grow! They will be measuring their plants weekly!
Social Studies: We finished taking our train tour of Massachusetts! Students stopped at many towns and cities across our state such as Salem, Worcester, the Berkshires, and Springfield.
That's all for now! Have a great week!
