Hi everyone!
I hope you've enjoyed this weekend! I can't believe January is coming to an end. This year is flying by!
Here are some upcoming things to look forward to:
This Week's Remote Work: Please help your child to remember to put their completed remote work into their Take Home Folder to return to school. I collect these assignments, check off if they're completed, and provide feedback to students using them. There are several highlighted assignments on this week's remote schedule. These assignments are "must-do" assignments and should be completed during your child's remote learning days. This week, the "must-do" assignments are:
Math practice pages "Story Problems" and "More Problems for Close to 100" (Day 1 remote work)
Word Study Written Word Sort -- spelling of /z/ (Day 1 remote work)
Thinking Like a Historian Task 2-- "Sources" (Day 1 remote work)
Lexia Core 5
Dreambox
Climate Zones of the World Peardeck (Day 2 remote work)
Virtual Writer's Celebration: We are putting the finishing touches on our personal narratives and the kids are excited to share them with all of you! Please pencil us in on Zoom for Wednesday, February 3rd from 9-9:30 am! We welcome you to join your child on Zoom to listen to some 3rd grade stories in small breakout rooms. There will also be opportunities for you to leave compliments!
Valentine's Day: Students will be allowed to pass out Valentines this year as they have in previous years. Small cards and small toys (pencils, erasers, stickers, etc) are welcome, but food and candy are discouraged. I ask that Cohort B students bring their Valentines to school no later than Friday, February 5th. Cohort A students should bring their completed Valentines to school by Tuesday, February 9th. Our goal is to be sure every student gets a class set of Valentines before we leave for February break! I will send out a class list of first names this week so students can begin making their Valentines at home! Please let me know if you have any questions!
Here's a peek into what we've been working on in school!
Math: We have been thinking about combining three digit numbers and exploring how place value affects how many hundreds will be in the sum of two numbers. Students began playing the game "Go Collecting" to practice this! Have fun playing at home!
Writing: Students began mapping out the chapters they'll be writing in their animal research books. They began using a new graphic organizer to help them see which facts fit with each chapter and where they need to do more research!
Reading: We have been reading a lot of really interesting nonfiction texts. Students know that good nonfiction readers need to "rev up their minds" before reading by previewing the text features, and they also know that they can stop and make mini summaries of what they read by using their palm and fingers or by using boxes and bullets. Ask your child to tell you about how to make a mini summary!
Social Studies: Students started learning about the history of stamps and began making their own stamps to celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr.! We also talked a bit about Wednesday's inauguration and studied some of the past presidents and inaugural traditions!
That's all for now! Have a wonderful week!
