Religion and Worldviews

Curriculum Intent

At Trinity, our RSE curriculum encourages pupils to develop their sense of identity and belonging. It enables them to flourish as individuals within their communities and as citizens in a diverse society and global community. We believe that Religion and Worldviews has an important role in preparing pupils for adult life, employment and lifelong learning. It enables pupils to develop respect for and sensitivity to others, particularly those whose faiths and beliefs are different from their own. Pupils are compelled to contribute to the creation of a better world for all.

Sequencing and Progression

At Trinity, we follow the Haringey agreed syllabus - Awareness Mystery Value. The curriculum map has been designed to build upon children’s prior learning and promotes a fundamental understanding of a broad range of religions to be developed in each key stage. The units of study are framed as overarching core questions, with supplementary questions to deepen and facilitate discussion based lessons. Throughout the units, there is a twin focus relating to the ‘Six areas of enquiries’. One will be focussed on learning about religion and beliefs, whilst the other is learning from religion and beliefs. The curriculum is structured around six areas of enquiry to ensure that there is good coverage of skills, attitudes and of religious and non-religious worldviews. These areas include; Beliefs, teachings and sources, Identity, diversity and belonging, Practices and ways of life, Meaning, purpose and truth, Forms of expressing meaning and Values and commitments. The children’s knowledge and skills are built on each year, with breadth and balance.

What does Religion and Worldviews look like at Trinity?

Religion and Worldviews lessons are discussion based and pupil and enquiry led, allowing children to discover things for themselves. Speaking and listening activities encourage children to be curious and ask questions which enables them to develop a deeper understanding of the people and the world around them. They are encouraged to develop their own opinions and be reflective in their thoughts.

Through RWV lessons we provide awareness of various faiths and walks of life in our local, national and international community.

Early Years

In the Early Years, children learn about and explore different faiths through celebrations and festivals, such as Chinese New Year, Diwali, Easter and Eid. The children participate in activities and create collaborative artworks that teach them fundamental values of respect and an understanding of the diverse world around them.

Key Stage One and Two

For Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, Religion and Worldviews is taught weekly and our curriculum reinforces a message of tolerance and respect for others, no matter their ethnicity, beliefs, gender or disability. During these lessons, children are provided with a platform to confidently share their own ideas and experiences while also listening respectfully to the views and beliefs of their peers. Weaving through the heart of this our Trinity and British Values. Through our Religion and Worldviews curriculum, children are exposed to and explore Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism as well as non-religious faiths such as humanism and atheism. Every half term, pupils visit a place or worship, increasing the cultural capital and their experiences and engagement with world around them.
