Once the Assistant Director for Collections Management has reviewed and approved the submitted processing plan, the processor will begin to actually appraise, arrange, and describe their material.
Unlike pre-processing work, which has a more defined set of steps, processing is a fluid experience. As such, the order of steps taken by the processor during this stage are ultimately dependent on the nature of the material and level(s) of processing selected by the processor. That said, the processor will typically do the following over the course of a project:
Appraise the material to determine what should be retained, restricted, or separated.
Arrange and rehouse material.
Describe the material in a MARC record and some kind of finding aid.
Submit conservation request(s) to the Bentley's conservator if conservation issues are uncovered.
Consult each of the site's subpages, which have been ordered alphabetically based on their page's names, for more information on each of these processes.
