4th Reading- We finished up our novel, Chasing Vermeer and students are working on a group project in class. The group project is emphasizing vocabulary usage, sequencing, and character and plot analysis. We are also wrapping up our unit of text structure. Lastly, we are moving ahead with our Greek & Latin roots. We are almost on #60. Our 1-60 Root test will be on March 2nd! Don't forget that the Quarter 3 ILR project is due on March 5th. This project includes the t-shirt, summary, and AR test!
4th Grade Math- We are in the thick of fractions and mixed numbers. Right now we are focusing on addition and subtraction of fractions with like and unlike denominators, and mixed numbers. Students are working hard as this is brand new material for most of them. Right before the break, we will learn how to multiply fractions using cross canceling. After Spring Break, we will wrap up our fraction unit with the division of fractions. We will be participating in our 4th Math Olympiad competition here soon. Students are really getting better at using alternative strategies to solve these problems. Lastly, don't forget that there is an optional Math Project for Q3 due 3/5. Students who took this challenge on have been loving it. They are creating comic strips using www.makebeliefscomix.com. What fun! If your student wants to participate, there is still time! Have them see me! It's a fun way to earn extra credit and doesn't take too much time!
5th Reading- We are working on our latest novel, Wright 3. This mystery is so fun and the students are loving all the twists and turns. I always tell them to watch out for red herrings because Blue Baillet loves to throw them in. It was really fun to be able to visit Taliesin West last week and see Frank Lloyd Wright's work in person. What a genius and a man who had ideas so before his time! See below for a group photo! We are winding up our unit on text structure in the next few weeks and will have a unit exam on that. Lastly, don't forget about the ILR project choice board due on 3/5! ILR project includes AR test, summary, and a choice board presentation ( for those in Reading only or are trying to earn extra credit).
5th Grade Math- We are in the thick of Pre Algebra right now. Students are learning about expressions and equations. Next up, we will start learning about functions and inequalities. Lastly, don't forget about the Math Project for Q3 due 3/5. They are creating comic strips using www.makebeliefscomix.com. What fun!
6th Reading- We are working on our latest novel, Shakespeare Stealer. We are learning all about the Elizabethan era, the Renaissance, Shakespeare's text and vocabulary, and the dramatic reading in this unit. So far, students seem to be really enjoying the dramatic aspect of this unit. We will be also comparing and contrasting videos of scenes of the Shakespeare's plays to modern versions. Shakespeare Stealer is set in the Elizabethan era where the protagonist is struggling with following the orders of his master or following his gut and heart. This book is great for Socratic seminars! We will also be using our knowledge from this study as we attend the Renaissance Fair on March 6. More info to come soon about that field trip! We are winding up our unit on text structure in the next few weeks and will have a unit exam on that. Lastly, don't forget about the ILR project choice board due on 3/5! ILR project includes AR test, summary, and a choice board presentation (for those in Reading only or are trying to earn extra credit).
6th Grade Math- We are in our Geometry unit where we are learning about the circumference, area, and volume of 3D figures. We are memorizing formulas to measure 3D figures and composite figures. We will be participating in our 4th Math Olympiad competition before Spring Break. Students are getting really good at solving these problems in alternative ways. Lastly, don't forget about the Quarter 3 Math Project on Statistics. We have been discussing this project weekly and sharing our findings and progress with our classmates. It is due on 3/5!
I wanted to say a big thanks for all the Valentine's love, chocolates, flowers, cards, candy, etc.... I definitely felt the love this week! Thanks for spoiling me as usual!
