Here is the latest news in Honors!
4th Grade Reading-In reading, we are working on nonfiction text structure and metacognitive markers. We are also almost to Root #20 in our Greek and Latin roots. The next root test will cover roots 1-20 and will be on October 11th. Students need to know root definition as well as the words that have that stem in them. They do NOT need to know the definition of the English words with the stem in them for this test but they WILL have to for the next test. I showed the students what the test looks like this week.
Students did a fantastic job on the first book project. I was so impressed with their masks and participation in the Character Masquerade party! They all looked fantastic and performed beautifully! Thank you to all the parents for helping them prepare for this book project. I can’t wait to see what they produce in Quarter 2. I will be assigning the Independent Literature Requirement for Quarter 2 on 10/17. Our next literature book is From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. Lastly , first quarter grades will be closing on October 11th.
4th Grade Math-In Math, we are moving right along. Chapter 3 is introducing LONG DIVISION and estimating quotients. We will be wrapping up Chapter 3 next week and jumping into Ch. 4. Chapter 4 is MORE division but focuses on 2 digit divisor division. I am super impressed with the Quarter 1 Math Projects. The students did a fabulous job. I will be assigning the next quarterly project on 10/17. All extra credit Dynamath magazines are due on October 11th. The end of quarter is fast approaching on October 11th.
5th Grade Reading- Students did a fantastic job on the first book project. I was so impressed with the masks and book summaries. Excellent!
The last few weeks we have been focusing on nonfiction text structure, organization, and metacognitive markers. Basically, we are starting the basics of annotating and citing the text. We will be using these skills to help us analyze our fiction literature books. We will be jumping into our next literature novel this week. Students will have a choice between Island of the Blue Dolphins or Hatchet. These are fantastic books to study literary elements, theme, vocabulary, and comprehension as well as analyze text structure, etc. I will be assigning the next Independent Literature Requirement on 10/17. Students should begin to look for a book that is in a different genre than in Q1. I will then conference with them before they start reading!
5th Grade Math- In Math, the students are working really hard. I was super impressed with their Math Munching quarterly projects! Their posters are on display on my bulletin board outside my room! Come and take a look! The extra credit Scholastic Math magazine is due 10/11. We are now working in Chapter 1 which covers rates and ratios. The end of quarter is fast approaching and we will be wrapping up Chapter 1 next week and grades will cut on 10/11.
