Greetings!
Just a little update from Honors.
4th Grade
In Reading, we have wrapped up our literature unit, The Mixed Up Files of Basil E. Frankweiler. Boy, did it have a cool twist at the end of the story! I was so proud of the conversations that students had during socratic seminars, and the student’s use of the metacognitive markers in their text. We are continuing to learn how to annotate text this week. Next up, we will complete one more literature study on Caddie Woodlawn by Betsy Byers. What a classic! We will be learning about historical fiction as well as focusing on compare & contrast, sequencing, using text evidence to draw conclusions, and drawing connections between the text to ourselves and the world around us. We had our root test covering roots 1-30 and the class average was an 88%! Students should be studying their roots daily. They can use their flashcards or the quizlet on Google Classroom. The next root test over #1-40 will be on 12/21! Lastly, don’t forget about the Independent Literature Requirement. There are detailed explanations and rubrics on my website. The ILR project is due 12/2.
In Math, we are inundated with decimals. We have mastered addition and subtraction and now we are learning how to multiply and divide decimals. Next up, FRACTIONS!!! On Monday, we will be competing in our first Math Olympiad Competition. The students are nervous but excited! I have not doubt that they will do great. Lastly, don’t forget about the Math Quarterly Project. There are detailed explanations and rubrics on my website. The Math project is due 12/12.
5th Grade
In Reading, we are wrapping up our two literature studies. We have been reading Hatchet and Island of the Blue Dolphin. We have already had some great socratic seminars and literature discussions over the books. It is so great to see the students lead and manage their own discussions. They are also working on using their metacognitive markers and annotate and cite the text. We are also continuing to work on our 4 Level Grammar and Caesar’s English stems. Lastly, don’t forget about the Independent Literature Requirement. There are detailed explanations and rubrics on my website. The ILR project is due 12/2.
In Math, we are moving into the world of Expressions and Equations. In chapter 5, we are learning about integers, absolute value, and the coordinate plane. On Monday, we will be competing in our first Math Olympiad Competition of this school year. The students are nervous but excited! I have not doubt that they will do great. They feel so much more confident this year. Lastly, don’t forget about the Math Quarterly Project. There are detailed explanations and rubrics on my website. The Math project is due 12/12.
6th Grade
In Reading, we are continuing with our next literature study, The Egypt Game. This book ties perfectly with what they are learning right now in World Cultures with Mrs. Edin. We will be wrapping this book up before Thanksgiving break. I am hoping we will squeeze in one more literature study, Old Yeller. What a classic! I know this book will provide some awesome discussions and maybe a few tears. I cry everytime. We are also continuing to work on our Caesar’s English stems. In terms of skills books for Quarter 2, I will input skills book 3-4 for Quarter 2 grades. As always, I recommend students to get ahead and use their time wisely. Lastly, don’t forget about the Independent Literature Requirement. There are detailed explanations and rubrics on my website. The ILR project is due 12/2.
In Math, we have entered the world of Expressions & Equations. Students are learning how to write and solve algebraic expressions as well as linear expressions. On Monday, we will be competing in our first Math Olympiad Competition of this school year. They feel so much more confident this year. Lastly, don’t forget about the Math Quarterly Project. There are detailed explanations and rubrics on my website. The Math project is due 12/12.
Middle School recommendations-A teacher recommendation has been required in past years for certain academies. I am happy to complete these for your child. Due to the volume of requests I receive, please allow for at least a three-day turn around before I mail to DSMS. Also, please send all recommendations in with an addressed, stamped envelope. Thank you!
Have a great Thanksgiving and enjoy your family time! Be well!
