4th Grade Reading
In reading, we are continuing our William & Mary unit with the theme of Perspective. We have been reading reading the Phantom Tollbooth novel. In the past few weeks, we have covered point of view, author’s purpose, and types of irony. We have had many great discussions on irony and have been exploring the figurative language in Phantom Tollbooth. This week we began our next unit on theme. We will be learning about theme with fables, short stories, and our novel. We will conclude our theme unit by writing a book review of Phantom Tollbooth.
We are continuing our Latin & Greek stems. We have learned 30 stems, therefore, our third test will be this Thursday,November 16th! Students can be using their flashcards that we make in class or my Quizlet account to practice those stems! Practice. Practice. Practice.
We are making great strides with our nonfiction reading on ReadTheory. Students are showing growth by leaps and bounds.
Lastly, the Quarter 2 Independent Literature Requirement has been assigned and book choices have been made. Students should be reading 20 minutes a night. Once they finish their book, they should take an AR test on it and begin working on the graphic novel. ILR project is due 12/18!
4th Grade Math-In Math, we have jumped into the world of decimals. Last week, we worked on adding and subtracting decimals. We will have a quiz over that tomorrow. We will then jump into multiplying and dividing of decimals.
Our first Math Olympiad competition is on Friday, 11/17. We have been practicing and preparing for this since August. We are ready! We will have a mock competition on Thursday so the students know what to expect. They are so excited!
Don’t forget that students can be checking out the Dynamath magazine to earn extra credit!
The Math Quarterly Project is due on December 11th. Students should be working on their menus little by little. Last week, we discussed the project in greater detail and I answered many questions. Then, they got to use another menu and practice adding and subtracting decimals while working in partners. Lots of fun in math class!
5th Grade Reading- In reading, we have been working on our 4 Level grammar sentences that tie in with Caesar’s English stems. We have covered Level 1 which are the 8 parts of speech and Level 2 which is parts of a sentence including subject, predicates, direct objects, and indirect objects. This past week, we learned about Level 3 which are phrases such as prepositional phrases, appositives, and verbal phrases. We have been practicing all 3 levels and will have a quiz tomorrow over Level 1-3. After Thanksgiving break, we will begin learning Level 4 which is clauses and types of sentences.
We have been focusing on many fiction reading skills this semester. We have learned author’s purpose, types of conflict, point of view, and types of irony. Our next reading unit we will begin to cover inferences and predictions and then we will focus on theme. We will conclude our unit on theme by learning how to write a book review over My Daniel. My Daniel is our next literature novel. It is about a grandmother who is telling her grandchildren a story about her past. This historical fiction literature novel will continue to help us examine the use of cyclic patterns in literature as well as explore the changes in point of view and narrative voice as the setting changes. We will also look at literary devices such as foreshadowing, figurative language, symbolism, and mood. It is a great read!

5th Grade Math- We wrapped up Chapter 1 this week. We learned about unit rates and ratios. We will be starting Chapter 2 after Sky Camp. Chapter 2 will be covering fractions, decimals, and percents.

Skillsbook #3-5 are being counted for Quarter 2 grades. The third skillsbook was due on 11/9/17. The third skillsbook is due 12/1 and the 5th skillsbook is due 12/15. Please check with your student as to where they are in terms of their skillsbook completion.
6th Grade Math- We are finishing Chapter 2 in the next week. Our Chapter 2 test will take place on Tuesday, November 21st! If your student plans to not be at school and take an early Thanksgiving break, please have them arrange to take the test early. After Chapter 2, we will be jumping into Chapter 5. Chapter 5 cover algebraic expressions. We will be covering properties of operations, the distributive property, as well as learning to simplify and factor linear expressions.
