Just a little update from Honors.

A big thank you for all the flowers, Cokes, goodies, notes, and lunches during this conference week! With 72 students and families, there were some late nights and these treats came in handy!

Be well!

4th Grade

In Reading, we have jumped into our next literature unit, The Mixed Up Files of Basil E. Frankweiler. We are working on comprehension, theme, and using our metacognitive markers to begin citing text. We also have been working on our Greek/Latin Roots. We will have a root test every 10 root cards and the tests are cumulative. We are on root card # 24 and I am predicting the next cumulative root test 1-30 will be around 11/16. Students should be studying their roots daily. They can use their flashcards or quizlet. Lastly, I have assigned the Quarter 2 Independent Literature Requirement and met with each student over their book choice and project choice. I have also given detailed explanations and rubrics. All of this information can be found on my website. The ILR project is due 12/2.

In Math, we have continued to focus on problem solving strategies and the 8 math practices with our Math Olympiad problems and Number talks. Students are getting better and better at explaining their math thinking. At the end of next week, we will be having a MOCK competition to let the students feel what the competition days will be like! They are getting super excited! We are wrapping up Ch. 4 which covers division with divisors that are 2 digit. Next up is decimals! We will be learning to add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals! I also assigned the Quarter 2 Math Quarterly Project. I gave all the detailed explanations and rubrics (which can also be found on my website) and the due date is 12/12! Finally, the new Dynamath magazine is out for extra credit!

In Reading, we jumped into our next literature studies. We have two literature groups going in class right now. We are reading Hatchet and Island of the Blue Dolphin. We have already had some great socratic seminars and literature discussions over the books. It is so great to see the students lead and manage their own discussions. They are also working on using their metacognitive markers and annotate and cite the text. We are also continuing to work on our 4 Level Grammar and Caesar’s English stems. Lastly, I have assigned the Quarter 2 Independent Literature Requirement and met with each student over their book choice and project choice. I have also given detailed explanations and rubrics. All of this information can be found on my website. The ILR project is due 12/2.

We are definitely trying to master the connection between percents, decimals, and fractions. Next week, we will be covering percent proportions and equations. These can be hard concepts for some, so you might want to check in with your student’s understanding. I also assigned the Quarter 2 Math Quarterly Project. I gave all the detailed explanations and rubrics (which can also be found on my website) and the due date is 12/12! Finally, the new Scholastic Math magazine is out for extra credit!

In Reading, we have just started our next literature study, The Egypt Game. This book goes great with what they are learning right now in World Cultures with Mrs. Edin. We have already had some great socratic seminars and literature discussions over the books. It is so great to see the students lead and manage their own discussions. They are also working on using their metacognitive markers to annotate and cite the text in their discussions. We are also continuing to work on our Caesar’s English stems. In terms of skills books for Quarter 2, I will input skills book 3-4 for Quarter 2 grades. As always, I recommend students to get ahead and use their time wisely. We are learning how to write and solve percent proportions and equations. You might remember this as “Is over of equals percent over 100”! Next week, we will be learning about percent of change, sales tax, tips, markups and discounts. We will conclude this unit with some financial literacy by learning how to use the Simple Interest equation of I=prt. I also assigned the Quarter 2 Math Quarterly Project. I gave all the detailed explanations and rubrics (which can also be found on my website) and the due date is 12/12! Finally, the new Scholastic Math magazine is out for extra credit!
