  • Honors News 2/16/18 Can you believe February is almost over?  3 more weeks until Spring Break!  Pi Day 2018 will be on March 9, 2018 from 9:00-12:00.  Please check out my Sign Up Genius to help that day. Thank you. 4th Reading-  We finished up our novel, Chasing Vermeer and students are working on a group project in class.  The group project is emphasizing vocabulary usage, sequencing, and character and plot analysis.  We are also wrapping up our unit of text structure.  Lastly, we are moving ahead with our Greek & Latin roots.  We are almost on #60.  Our 1-60 Root test will be on March 2nd!  Don't forget that the Quarter 3 ...

  • Honors News 1/12/18 Happy New Year!!!  Although we have only been back in school for 5 days, we have accomplished a lot.  4th GradeReading:We shared their graphic novels in class.  The students put a lot of effort into these and it showed in their products!  I have loved reading all of them! We also started our next reading unit.  We are learning about text structure.  Text structure is how an author organizes their writing.  There are about 7 different text structures in both nonfiction and fiction.  This week, we are focusing on chronological order in both fiction and nonfiction literature.  To practice, students used a graphic organizer and plotted 5 events that occurred over the holiday break.  They then shared these ...

  • Honors News 12/22/17 Here is the last Honors News for 2017!  Can you believe 2017 is almost over?  4th GradeIn Math, we wrapped up decimals with a unit test.  The students did well but could still use practice.  I recommend because practice makes perfect.  We also took the middle of the year benchmarks and shared our Menu Math.  We even paired up and solved our partner's word problems for their menu.  What fun!  In January, we will be jumping into our next big unit covering fractions.  We will be learning how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions.  Can't wait!   In Reading, we finished up our latest novel, My Side of the Mountain.  We had a lot of ...

  • Honors News 12/1/17 Here is the latest news in Honors!4th Grade ReadingAfter wrapping up a mini unit on theme and inferencing, the students learned how to write their first book review.  A book review consists of 3 pieces:  plot summary, thematic statement, and a reason to recommend persuasive paragraph.  The students took what they had learned about theme and as a class we brainstormed possible themes for Phantom Tollbooth.  Once they had a theme, they learned how to find textual evidence and cite it correctly in their thematic statement.  The thematic statement also has 3 parts to it:  text to text, text to self, and text to society.  First, the students had to describe using textual evidence how the theme was ...

  • Honors News 11/13/17 Here is the latest news in Honors!4th Grade ReadingIn reading, we are continuing our William & Mary unit with the theme of Perspective.  We have been reading reading the Phantom Tollbooth novel.  In the past few weeks, we have covered point of view, author’s purpose, and types of irony.  We have had many great discussions on irony and have been exploring the figurative language in Phantom Tollbooth.  This week we began our next unit on theme.  We will be learning about theme with fables, short stories, and our novel.  We will conclude our theme unit by writing a book review of Phantom Tollbooth.We are continuing our Latin & Greek stems.  We have learned 30 stems, therefore, our third ...
