Here is the last Honors News for 2017! Can you believe 2017 is almost over?
4th Grade
In Math, we wrapped up decimals with a unit test. The students did well but could still use practice. I recommend ixl.com because practice makes perfect. We also took the middle of the year benchmarks and shared our Menu Math. We even paired up and solved our partner's word problems for their menu. What fun! In January, we will be jumping into our next big unit covering fractions. We will be learning how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions. Can't wait!
In Reading, we finished up our latest novel, My Side of the Mountain. We had a lot of discussions and Socratic seminars regarding this novel. The students also learned what epilogues are and got a chance to write their own and share with literature groups. Lastly, we had our Root test 1-40 and the students did awesome! Class average was a 83%! Woo Hoo! In January, we will be jumping into text structure and our next novel study, Chasing Vermeer.
5th Grade
In Math, we took our middle of year benchmarks and played our file folder games. What fun! The students always enjoy this project. In January, we will be jumping into Chapter 5 which will cover integers, absolute value, and the coordinate plane.
In Reading, we finished up a unit on theme and My Daniel by learning how to write a book review and thematic statement. We did all the writing in class as I modeled each part for them. Lastly, we took our Latin stems from semester 1 Caesar's English I and created comic strips about them. We shared our comic strips in class. In January, we will begin studying the 8 elements of reasoning and making persuasive arguments. Students will learn how to logically research the pros and cons of an issue as well as the stakeholders of an issue, and to debate it in front of the class. Also, we will be jumping into text structure and our next novel study, The Wright 3.
6th Grade
The 6th Grade PILOTS are very busy up until the end here in Honors. In Math, we took our middle of year benchmarks and shared our Menu Math Projects. We even paired up and solved each other's word problems from our projects. We will be jumping into Chapter 6 when we return which covers more algebraic equations and inequalities. Students will be learning how to solve one-step and two-step equations and inequalities.
