Honors News 1/13/17

Greetings and Happy New Year!

Just a little update from Honors.

SAGE Tests-The Gifted Department is participating in piloting new curriculum developed by the College of William and Mary, and we are part of this process. We did some testing this week, which will not affect students' grades, but which will help with assessing the effectiveness of the curriculum. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

4th Grade

In Reading, we will begin our next literature unit titled Chasing Vermeer. This is the first book of a trilogy that we will be reading throughout your student’s time in Honors at Sonoran Sky. In 4th grade, they will read Chasing Vermeer, 5th Grade is Wright 3, and 6th Grade is Calder Game. This is a fantastic series by

ILR- The new Independent Literature requirement has been assigned. Students are working this week to make a book and project choice. All book and project choices were due today. All students must read a book in a new genre and in their new AR level as well as complete the written book summary and project. The final project is due March 1st!

In Math, we have jumped into FRACTIONS! This week we have learned Least Common Multiple, equivalent fractions, Greatest Common Factor, and how to simplify fractions. We will continue to work on these skills next week with a test on these skills next Friday.

Today, we competed in our third Math Olympiad Competition. Only two more competitions. We will continue to practice in class.

The Quarter 2 Math Menus have been assigned. Students are creating fraction cartoon strips. All information is on my website. The final projects are due 3/3.

5th Grade

In Reading, we will begin our next literature unit titled Wright 3. This is the second book of a set that we will be reading throughout your student’s time in Honors at Sonoran Sky. In 4th grade, they will read Chasing Vermeer, 5th Grade is Wright 3, and 6th Grade is Calder Game. This is a fantastic series by Blue Balliett. I want to thank you for your purchase and donation of Wright 3 to Sonoran Sky Honors.

In Math, we have jumped into Algebra! This week we learned how to work with variable and how to factor and simplify algebraic expressions. There will be a test next Wednesday, 1/18.

6th Grade

In Reading, we will begin our next literature unit titled Calder Game. This is the third book of a set that we will be reading throughout your student’s time in Honors at Sonoran Sky. In 4th grade, they will read Chasing Vermeer, 5th Grade is Wright 3, and 6th Grade is Calder Game. This is a fantastic series by Blue Balliett. I want to thank you for your purchase and donation of Calder Game to Sonoran Sky Honors.

Skills Books #5-7 for Quarter 3 will be graded and recorded with a due date of 3/3.

In Math, we have jumped into Geometry This week we learned how to classify angles as well as know the difference between supplementary and complementary angles. We will have a mid chapter quiz next Wednesday, 1/18.

Per the syllabus, there are no more corrections to quizzes or tests for the remaining year. This is in an effort to prepare for the transition to middle school. This pertains to math and reading.
