4th Grade News- In Honors Reading, the students are thoroughly enjoying The Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe. We have been working on vocabulary and annotating our text. We are revving up for our field trip to see the play on February 9th! I have even ordered Turkish Delight from Liberty Orchards for the children to taste! They are so excited to try this sweet dessert that has Edmund in such a tizzy! If you have any concerns regarding the ingredients of the Turkish Delight, here is the link off the manufacturer's website. Please let me know if you would rather your student not have a taste! http://www.libertyorchards.com/category/Turkish_De..., at the conclusion of our novel, we will be creating in class book projects to extend our learning. We also just had our 4th Root test...students did fantastic. Keep studying.
In Honors Math, we have wrapped up our second unit on division as well as our 3rd Math Olympiad competition. Students are really getting the hang of the Math Olympiad questions and are scoring better and better. Way to go, 4th Grade!
DynaMath requirements will be changing as of Feb. 1. I have so many students approach me asking for extra credit to bump their grades...my new answer is DynaMath. Dynamath will be an optional, challenge activity for those looking for extra credit.
Lastly, our next math unit involves decimals. We will be adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals. Here we go!
5th Grade News- In reading, we have jumped into our novel My Brother Sam is Dead. This book correlates perfectly with Sing America Sing and what the students are learning in Social Studies right now.
In Math, students are learning about percents, fractions, and decimals and how they all relate. We will be having a test over Chapter 2 next week. We will then be jumping into Chapter 5 which is an introduction into integers and the coordinate plane. Lastly, the students just participated in their 3rd Math Olympiad competition. With each competition, I have seen so much improvement. Way to go!

6th Grade News- In Honors Reading, we are diving into The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. What a classic novel! Students will be drawing inferences, conclusions, and generalizations using the text. Students will also compare and contrast themes and issues across the text. Lastly, we will be working on analyzing character traits, motivations, and point of view.
In Honors Math, we wrapped up Chapter 5 on expressions and equations today with a test. I STRONGLY encourage students to review Chapter 5 on ixl Expressions/Equations lessons 1-13. Next up, Chapter 6 which covers equations and inequalities. They will be learning to solve all types of equations and inequalities.
Stock Market Game- Based on the level of interest during our literature study The Westing Game as well as Chapter 2 in math, I have decided to pilot the Stock Market Game. Students will be broken into teams and will receive lessons on how the stock market works. Each team will receive "$100,000" and will learn how to manage a portfolio on the stock market. Each team will get to make trades, research companies, and learn the difference between bonds, mutual funds, and stocks. The team with the greatest growth in their portfolio at the end will be the winners. Here is a link with more information: http://www.stockmarketgame.org/
If any parent/grandparent has expertise in the stock market/financial advisor, guest speakers are always welcome. Feel free to contact me to schedule a time.
Students will be competing in their 3rd Math Olympiad Competition next week. I have seen such improvement in scores and understanding so far...I can't wait to see how they perform on #3!
