Civilization, Philosophy, and the Foundations of the Western World
This course provides an in-depth study of Ancient Greece and Rome with a central emphasis on philosophical thought and its influence on political systems, civic life, ethics, and cultural traditions. Students examine how Greek and Roman philosophers shaped ideas about justice, government, citizenship, reason, and human nature, and how these ideas continue to influence modern institutions and ways of thinking. Instruction emphasizes primary source analysis, historical reasoning, and philosophical inquiry.
