This semester-long Speech course is designed to help students develop both writing and public speaking skills through the preparation and delivery of a variety of speeches. Students will learn how to express their ideas clearly and effectively, using strong organization, purposeful word choice, and confident delivery.
Writing is a critical part of this course. Each speech begins with the written word. Students will draft outlines, structure arguments, revise for clarity, and tailor language for specific audiences and purposes. Strong writing skills are essential to success in this class, and students will have multiple opportunities to strengthen those skills as they plan and revise their speeches.
Throughout the course, students will write and present five main types of speeches: an informal introduction, a how-to demonstration, an informative research-based speech, a persuasive argument, and a final choice between a eulogy or an award acceptance speech. In addition to presentation skills, students will practice critical thinking, audience awareness, and written communication.
This course supports growth in both written and spoken communication; skills that are valuable in academics, future careers, and everyday life.
This is a one semester class available in both the fall and spring semesters.
