Five Ways to Build a Culture of Wellness in Your School
1. Follow the Student Wellness Policy. Did you know that EUSD has a Student Wellness Policy? The Wellness Policy provides guidance on how to support student health and development.
2. Start the day with movement. Take a page out of Reidy Creek's book and take a 10-minute activity break first thing in the morning. This not only helps students towards achieving their 60-minutes of physical activity for the day, but will also make sure they are awake and ready to learn.
3. Say No to the Sweet Stuff. Kids today eat too much sugar, which negatively effects their health and academic performance. Consider adopting a no sugar policy at your school, including birthday parties, holiday celebrations, and special events. This will allow parents to decide how often their kids should have treats and give schools an opportunity to teach students how to celebrate while still taking care of their health.
4. Start a Student Wellness Committee. Empower students to take charge of their environment so it supports a healthy lifestyle they can practice throughout their life.
5. Host a Family Wellness Night. Invite all families to the school for a night of healthy fun and learning! Have different games and booths that get everyone moving and teach them how to bring wellness into all aspects of their lives.
"A wide variety of research continues to demonstrate the positive correlation between health and learning and that they are mutually reinforcing. There’s little disagreement that, whether we’re talking about improved nutrition or increased physical activity, students with health-promoting behaviors perform better academically than those with poor health behaviors. Simply put, healthy students are better students."
